What is Caltex Fuel Your School (FYS)?

  • Community engagement campaign by Chevron to improve education in schools that are highly in need of funding.
  • Enhance school facilities to give high-quality classroom learning experiences for students.
  • Empowers teachers and students in learning Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

In December 2023, Chevron Malaysia’s Corporate Affairs with support from Retail Partners, launched Caltex Fuel Your School (FYS) in Muar and Segamat, Johor. The focus for FYS 2023/2024 was ‘Aquaponic & Smart Farming to tackle Food Insecurity’, in line with its objective to drive STEM learning in schools.

Why “Aquaponic & Smart Farming to tackle Food Insecurity”?

  • In line with the National Science Challenge 2023 theme - “Ensuring the Nation’s Food Security through Science, Technology & Innovation”.
  • To spark interest in aquaculture & hydroponics amongst students and teachers.
  • To help combat food insecurity issues due to rising living costs and inflation.
  • Pilot project – 15 pre-selected schools in Johor with interest and in need of funding.

All participating schools received:

  • Aquaponics set (420 plants & 60 fish capacity) by Havva Agrotech.
  • 1:1 training by MyKasih Foundation & Havva Agrotech for teachers and students.

The produce from the aquaponics systems was distributed to:

  1. The schools’ food programme
  2. Needy students from less-privileged families.
  3. Local community centres i.e., orphanages, old folks’ homes, and low-income groups.
  4. The public, through sales intended to generate income for schools. This income will be used to organize more community programs (through school open days and/or sales at Caltex service stations).

The first two pilot schools, SK Paya Jakas in Segamat and SK Temiang in Muar, successfully harvested 13 kg of vegetables from their initial farming efforts after a few weeks. These results were then used for the schools’ food program, impacting nearly 550 indirect beneficiaries.
